Why karat and fineness change the value

Two items of the same weight can have very different values. A 10 g 22K chain contains 9.17 g of gold, while a 10 g 9K chain contains only 3.75 g — less than half. Fineness marks (999, 916, 750, 585, 375) state the gold content per thousand parts and are more precise than karat numbers. When converting, always select the fineness shown on the item rather than guessing from its colour, because white, rose and yellow gold can share the same karat.

Worked conversion examples

10 tola of 22K gold = 116.64 g × 0.9167 = 106.92 g pure gold, worth about $14,261.16. 5 Hong Kong taels at 999 fineness = 187.145 g gross and 186.957855 g fine, worth $24,936.73. 50 pennyweight of 14K = 77.76 g × 0.5833 = 45.36 g pure, worth $6,050.19. 2 kg of 999 silver contains 1998 g fine silver, worth $3,670.51.

These examples show why the unit matters: a tola is about a third of a troy ounce, while a tael is slightly more than one ounce. Always confirm which unit a dealer or jeweller is using before comparing quotes, especially when buying gold abroad.

Converting metal weight to market value

The converter turns any quantity of gold, silver, platinum or palladium into its live market value. It supports grams, troy ounces, kilograms and traditional units such as the tola (11.6638 g, used in South Asia and the Gulf) and the tael (37.429 g, used in Hong Kong).

Today one tola of 24K gold is worth about $1,555.74, one Hong Kong tael about $4,992.34 and one kilogram about $133,381.55.

1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g. 1 kilogram = 32.1507 troy ounces. 1 tola = 0.375 troy ounces. 1 tael = 1.2034 troy ounces. 1 pennyweight (dwt) = 1.555 g. 1 grain = 0.0648 g. Precious metals are never priced in the common avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 g, which is a frequent source of confusion.

Converted to grams, today's gold spot is $133.38 per gram and silver is $1.84 per gram.

Currency conversion

Prices in EUR and GBP come straight from the data feed for those currencies, so they reflect current exchange rates: gold is about €3,700.26 per ounce in euros and £3,125.66 in pounds right now.

Because the converter applies the live price, the same weight can have a different value an hour later. Re-check the result before making a decision.

Tips for using the converter

Enter the net weight of the precious metal, not the gross weight of an item with stones or other parts. Choose the correct karat or fineness — 14K (585) is very different from 18K (750). If you are converting bullion, choose 24K (999) for gold and 999 for silver.

Choose conventions before converting a regional quote

Traditional unit names need a gram definition. A tael used in one market is not automatically the same as a tael in another, and a Thai baht weight is not a currency amount. This site states its Hong Kong tael and Thai baht conventions rather than treating the word alone as precise. Ask the dealer which gram equivalent applies and whether the advertised price is for fine bullion or a jewelry grade. A ten-tola 22K price and a ten-tola fine-gold price describe different gold contents.

Currency translation also requires a timestamp. Major currency columns use available feed quotes; additional country currencies use a daily-reference FX feed. The FX reference is not a bank’s executable conversion and excludes spreads or payment fees. A missing quote must remain unavailable, not become an apparent zero-value item. If you need a settlement amount, ask the buyer which currency is payable and whether the exchange rate is fixed before or after testing.

Use net metal weight, not an item’s gross weight with stones or mechanisms. For a mint-specified fine ounce, do not discount for karat a second time. When a nominal karat factor differs slightly from a fineness stamp, retain that distinction in the notes and use an assay for a formal valuation.
