14K gold is 58.33% gold — 14 parts out of 24 — and is the most common grade for jewellery sold in the United States. It is often referred to as 585 gold after its European hallmark.
With a higher share of copper, silver and zinc, 14K is harder and more scratch-resistant than 18K, so it is ideal for everyday rings, chains, earrings and class rings. It is also less expensive per gram.
How the 14K gold price is calculated
Gold is traded internationally as pure 24K metal per troy ounce. To find the 14K price, multiply the spot price by the 14K purity factor of 0.5833 and divide by 31.1035 to convert ounces to grams. Today that gives USD 77.80 per gram of 14K gold, compared with USD 133.38 for pure 24K.
