What the EUR spot quote means

Spot is an indicative wholesale reference for fine gold, expressed here in EUR per troy ounce. It is not an offer to buy a particular object. A physical coin or bar has fabrication, distribution and verification costs; jewelry adds design, setting and retail costs. Compare like-for-like quotes with the same currency, unit, metal content and timestamp. A page displaying a newer observation can differ from a dealer screen without either one using the same settlement convention.

Convert ounces into grams without a unit error

Divide the troy-ounce price by 31.1034768 to get the fine-metal price per gram, then multiply by weight. A 10 g holding is therefore ten times the per-gram reference; it is not ten times the ounce quote. The ordinary ounce used for many household goods weighs about 28.35 g and is unsuitable for this calculation. The table above uses the troy convention and shows each weight independently so you can compare small and large holdings without estimating mentally.

Value jewelry using net weight and purity

An eighteen-karat alloy contains 75% gold by mass. Fourteen-karat gold uses a nominal factor of about 0.5833, while a 585 mark states 58.5%; an assay-based settlement should use the applicable precise fineness. Nine-karat gold contains 37.5%. Multiply only the net gold-bearing alloy weight, not stones, a watch movement or unrelated steel components. Separate mixed purities into individual calculations. Do not apply a purity discount twice if a mint already specifies a coin’s fine-metal content.

A worked example from the latest quote

An illustrative 10 g 18K item contains 7.5 g fine gold. At €118.97 per fine gram its melt reference is €892.25. A hypothetical buyer paying 80% would offer €713.80, before any additional agreed deduction. This percentage is an example, not a market promise.

Use the currency of your actual transaction

A local-currency quote reflects both the metal market and exchange-rate movements. A USD gold price can be flat while the price in your currency changes. Bank conversion spreads and dealer currency terms can differ from the indicative feed. Check current local tax rules for the specific product rather than assuming an investment-gold exemption covers ordinary jewelry or all precious metals.

Compare an offer with the reference transparently

Divide a net cash offer by the corresponding melt reference to compare its percentage. Ask for accepted weight, tested purity, reference time and every deduction in writing. Brand or collector demand can make a second-hand sale more appropriate than scrap, so investigate that before authorizing melting. A pawn loan is different from a sale: its redemption deadline and total borrowing charges need separate scrutiny. The chart below provides context, not a guaranteed selling signal or future price target.

Data freshness and limitations

MetalflowAPI supplies the market observations. Live data is cached for five minutes to keep pages fast; open pages request updates about once a minute, which does not imply a new upstream observation every minute. Historical responses are cached longer. During refreshes or upstream problems a cached quote may remain visible, so inspect the last-quote timestamp before acting. Missing observations are not zeros, and historical coverage can differ by currency. See our methodology and the selling checklist before using a reference in a transaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the gold price in EUR today?+

The latest recorded spot quote is €3,700.26 per troy ounce, or €118.97 per gram of fine gold. See the quote timestamp above.

How many grams are in a troy ounce?+

One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. An ordinary avoirdupois ounce is about 28.35 grams and must not be used with a troy-ounce metal quote.

Does the spot price include dealer premiums or tax?+

No. It is an indicative fine-metal reference. Product premiums, delivery, storage, taxes and dealer buyback deductions are separate.

How often do these quotes change?+

Open pages request quotes about every minute. Upstream live responses are cached for five minutes, and stale cached quotes may be served during a refresh or outage. The last quote timestamp is the best freshness check.

How do I calculate 14K jewelry value?+

Multiply net metal grams by the nominal 14K factor 0.5833, then by the fine-gold spot price per gram. A 585 assay or stamp denotes 0.585 and can differ slightly. Exclude stones and non-gold parts.

Is a pawnshop offer the same as a cash sale?+

No. A pawn loan has borrowing charges and redemption conditions, while a sale transfers ownership for an agreed payment. Compare the written terms as well as the metal reference.
